The Ninth Circuit court of appeals on Tuesday declared California’s Proposition 8, which bans gay marriage in the state, unconstitutional. The decision sets up what is almost certain to be a Supreme Court ruling on the matter. Of course California isn’t the only state wrestling with the issue of marriage equality. Here’s a look at where things stand across the country.
It’s important to note that today’s filing was an opinion, not an order. An order is needed to lift a stay that is currently preventing same-sex couples from marrying in California; as it stands now, county clerk offices are still not issuing marriage licenses to those couples.

The pale purple light of the lava lamp I got for Christmas -a homage to college clichés- barely illuminates your face, but it’s enough that I can find your lips. I can see the soft outline of your broken nose and I want to kiss it, but your chest is so warm I don’t want to move.
I can feel your eyes on me. They always are, scanning my face, looking for any indication of sadness or worry, but I’m not, I’m content and I’m smiling and I want to stay this way all night. I want to wake up in the same position we fell asleep in. I want to wake up to you kissing me at three a.m. and then curl back up asleep against you.
I want to do this every night, and I want to do it for as long as our bodies will let us.
